China Southern Airlines launches first flight to Mexico

  • China Southern Airlines Co Ltd (600029.SS) has flown its inaugural Guangzhou to Mexico City flight, via Vancouver, the first route operated by a domestic Chinese carrier to the Latin American nation, the Mexican government said on Tuesday. China’s interest in Mexico, including tourism and investment, has been on the rise in recent years. In 2016, 74,300 Chinese tourists visited Mexico, up 33.5 percent from a year earlier.

SOUTHCOM Tidd: Russia, Iran and China Expanding Influence in Central, South America

  • Russia, China and Iran are increasing interest in Central and South America, especially Moscow’s renewed focus on Nicaragua, the head of U.S. Southern Command told the Senate. While it has been primarily directed in economic development, Adm. Kurt Tidd said in a recent Senate Armed Services Committee hearing he sees it also as a way to gain for those three nations to gain influence.

China’s impressive stake in Latin America’s renewables

  • With the help of Chinese energy companies, Latin America is increasingly exploiting its renewable energy potential, with historic laggards like Argentina now embracing the region’s energy transition. New wind and solar projects are under construction across the region as partnerships with Chinese companies deliver affordable finance and materials to local governments and businesses. China’s company Envision Energy was awarded the largest contract, securing four projects, totalling 185 of the 708 megawatts granted to other international and local bidders, including some of the largest wind farms, which will be located in the southern provinces of Neuquén and Rio Negro. Other winners included Genneia, Central Puerto, Pan American Energy and the EREN Group. Of the solar energy projects, 75% stand to benefit from low-cost Chinese capital thanks to agreements with Argentine provincial governments.

Ecuador and China Bolster Ties with Xi Jinping Visit

China Delivers Two Y-12E Turboprops To Costa Rica’s Air Vigilance Service

  • Aviation Industries Corporation of China (AVIC) Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Company Ltd (HAIG) has delivered two Y-12Es turboprop aircraft to the Air Vigilance Service of Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Security. It marked the first time the HAIG’s products entered the Costa Rican market. After the delivery, the two aircraft will serve as domestic transportation and air patrol units within Costa Rica, between the mainland and islands, and within islands, the company said in a statement.

  • China and Latin America are cooperating in order to make the world a more balanced and peaceful place, a senior Chinese state official said Tuesday in Ecuador. “Cooperation can help to overcome the future economic challenges, increase China’s and Latin America’s competitivity and their ability for autonomous development,” said Liu Hongcai, vice minister of International Affairs for China’s Communist Party, at the Latin American progressive meeting, ELAP 2016. “We want to contribute to the global development, in a sustainable way, and work for a new type of international order, based on peace and a balanced relation of power, pushing for a fairer and more reasonable sense,” Liu said at the conference, hosted in the city of Guayaquil.
